How We'll Do That: Oxygen Advantage Method

Oxygen Advantage trains functional breathing and CO2 tolerance to sharpen focus, boost cardiovascular performance, and strengthen how your body and mind handle pressure. Designed for people who are already doing well but want to perform at a higher level.

Who Is It For

For people of all ages seeking sharper focus, better decision-making, and better performance at work, and for kids and teenagers building healthy breathing habits early, for better sleep and concentration. Suitable for all ages.

More About This Method

Patrick McKeown had severe asthma for over twenty years before finding relief through the Buteyko Method at age 26. He studied directly under Dr. Buteyko in Moscow and was certified to teach it in 2002. From there, he developed a new method — Oxygen Advantage — keeping Buteyko's science, but extending it beyond illness into sport, focus, and everyday performance.

Contraindications

Not suitable for uncontrolled cardiovascular conditions without medical clearance. When in doubt, please consult with your doctor first. These exercises are generally suitable for most individuals, except those who are in the first trimester of pregnancy. The goal is to minimize breathing volume without triggering psychological stress or involuntary breathing muscle contractions.

Guidelines for longer breath holds:

  • Due to their intensity, exercises involving longer breath holds are not suitable for individuals who are pregnant.
  • Clients with a Control Pause (CP) of less than 13 seconds, a serious medical condition, or who are over 60 years old should proceed with caution, and should not hold their breath for longer than feels comfortable.
  • Individuals with high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, type 1 diabetes, kidney disease, depression, or cancer should only practice nasal breathing and gentle reduced breathing.
  • Those with migraines, panic attacks, heart disease (after a recent heart attack), or hypertension may experience stress from holding their breath — even when measuring the CP. We begin with relaxation and light air-shortage exercises before progressing, and use distraction techniques where needed (e.g. nasal breathing, stopping sighing, relaxation, or gentle walking with the mouth closed).
  • Long breath holds are only suitable if the heart rate normalizes within 5–10 minutes after completing the exercise.
  • If the CP increases too quickly, a cleansing reaction may occur — this is more likely when practicing Maximum Pauses.
